Regional anesthetic techniques are ideally suited for surgery of the arm and hand. In addition to providing excellent postoperative analgesia and decreased recovery time, they may be associated with reduced perioperative cost when compared with general anesthesia. This chapter will review regional anesthetic techniques that are appropriate for surgery of the hand and arm and will discuss the common surgical procedures performed on the upper extremity.
